Bilingualism
I believe that being bilingual is a help and not a hinderance. Speaking more than one language is becoming more common. The UChicago study states that If you are exposed to two or more languages, you're a better communicator than the rest of us. Their research shows that kids that are either bilingual or are exposed to more than one language at home are more effective communicators than monolingual speakers (Hustad, 2015). Research suggests that the growing numbers of bilingual speakers may have an advantage that goes beyond communication: It turns out that being bilingual is also good for your brain (Cuda-Kroen, 2011). I do not think that it is our job as school personnel to privilege one language over another. Although it may be beneficial for children to be bilingual as stated in some of this research, as a future teacher I should favor anyones language as it may not make children feel comfortable if they knew you privileged someones language over theirs.
